I went to Idaho in June of 2022. This is my story.
So, I was supposed to be camping in Yellowstone over a long weekend, but then historic floods closed the park down. I called an audible and decided to go on an Idaho road trip. The first stop was to Boise, Idaho. Check out the view of the snake river! Did ya know, Evel Knievel jumped over it on a motorcycle? There’s a plaque and everything near Idaho Falls.

Next stop was Shoshone Falls (pictured below). The falls were a little low this time of the year, but it was very very windy.

I wild camped outside of Boise that night. It was beautiful! Here’s the coordinates for where I stayed. Check it out on google maps streetview? 43°36’12.7″N 115°54’30.0″W

The next morning I visited the Idaho capital building (fun fact: still haven’t seen the Utah capital building), and I had some breakfast. I also toured a prison since that’s what google recommended. Also had a nice stroll through the Boise Botanical Gardens. They were really nice! They had a whole scale display for nice plants you can plant near your home. That night I camped near Alturus Lake near Sawtooth City. It was nice. It was still daylight outside, so I did a hike that went into the literal wild. The photo below is about as far into the wild that I got. I was nervous about being out there when it got dark, so I turned around and hightailed it back to the slightly safer national forest.

Next up (after finding my way back to the main road by memory since data was spotty) was the Craters of the Moon! But first, check out that overlook of the sawtooth mountain range. Craters of the Moon was really cool. This was a recommendation from my boss, and it really paid off. It’s a vast ocean of old lava flows, and you can go inside some of the old lava tubes! They’ve got cool (and steep) hills of this stuff, but the views are worth it. The experience of walking in a lava flow is pretty cool, too. Beware, while some paths are paved enough, the path is small and its not unusual to have to go off the path. Also, its super windy! I was going to camp here, but I could not hold the tent in place. I ended up getting dinner at a nearby-ish (it’s all relative, right?) diner and then starting the drive back home.

On my way back home, I did stop at the POTATO MUSEUM! That’s actually a quality museum about potatoes, and I really enjoyed it. I’m really not a “read everything” person in a museum, but I did read most of the stuff here. They’ve got a fun VR simulation of a potato farmer, and the largest potato crisp. I do recommend this museum if for some reason you are ever in Idaho with an hour or so to kill.
